We have a lovely early 1980’s BMW motorbike in for a respray. In the pic below she doesn’t look too bad but close up the paint is looking very tired and the stripe on the tank has been rubbed off completely in places.
The customer brought the parts in off the bike. There was the metal petrol tank, two plastic side panels, a metal panel behind the seat and the plastic front mudguard.
The first job was to sand down the paint and sort the odd dent. They were small but pretty obvious. Once sorted the parts could be painted with an isolator and primer. The primer was a 2K primer and was left to dry overnight.
All the parts then got a couple of coats of metallic blue base. The tank and the panel behind the seat then needed an extra few stages as they required silver stripes adding. To do this I painted silver onto the parts with an airbrush in the general areas where the stripes needed to go.
When the silver was dry I covered the whole the panels with a clear base to give the paint some protection from the masking tape that went on next.
The tape had to go over the silver in exactly the correct places where the stripes needed to be. And of course the stripes on each side of the tank needed to match each other perfectly!
With that done the parts received a couple more coats of blue base, covering the stripe. When dry the tape was removed leaving behind a silver stripe!
All parts then received a couple of coats of clear. When dry, the parts with silver stripes were sanded down with 1000 grit wet and dry paper and lots of water. They then got another couple of coats of clear. Everything then was sanded again to 1500, then 2000, then 3000 then polished. Watch the vid below to see the results.
